Often when we add post we are contacted by programmers offering to provide content as manually adding them is “time consuming”. That’s the whole point! – at Hair Technology Intentional we never think it is too much trouble to do something the right way. At Hair Technology International we remember fondly our school days – well at least the seven week summer holidays! Anyway often you wonder how what you learn applies in the real world.

Fortunately maths is a pretty easy one to see how it is relevant and it is the same when it comes to the science of transplants.

On the basis that the average head has 100,000 hairs, and the normal amount of hair moved in a transplant is 2,500 – 3,500 hairs, this means that roughly 2-3% of the hair is being moved. So if a person has lost 1/4 of their hair (25%), the transplants will likely give 10% of the original coverage. The way this shortfall is usually overcome is for the hair to be added in one or more particular area (often the hairline) rather than all over the thinning area to allow the patient to wear their hair longer and swept back to cover the thinner areas behind.

This is important because what is often misunderstood is that the hair is spread out over a larger area than from which it is taken so clearly a full density cannot be achieved. Often celebrities advocating transplants use concealers and the like to make their hair look thicker so please remember the old adage “photographs never lie” in these days no longer applies.

Transplants are cosmetic surgery which are entirely visible even more than other forms of cosmetic surgery – the results are literally staring the patient in the face, day in day out for the rest of their life, so there is no room for a mistake.

At Hair Technology International we like to look at the lighter side of life when we can. Although we are completely serious about what we do, we realise that life is for living and strongly believe that if your hair’s thinning is stopping you being happy, you should do something about it.

In a recent programme on Sky 1, Karl Pilkington looked at the whole question of identity in his own unique way. As part of this journey he looked at his own hair loss and the cosmetic techniques available to help. To his surprise (and irritation) he was quite taken by having a full head of hair (“the closest thing to time travel” seeing the younger man he once was). Okay so this wasn’t a serious documentary or a permanent change for Karl but it illustrates the fact that once you get beyond the stereotypes and hangups, there are procedures available to restore the appearance of hair without the need for surgery.

Programme after programme covers surgery and transplants but there is almost a total absence of news about the non-surgical alternatives available. This is a shame since anyone can benefit from the latter whilst only a few are truthfully suitable for surgery.

Since our refurbishment, a few clients have commented that it feels like an upmarket private club and to be honest at Hair Technology International, we quite like that! The truth is that the people we see come here in complete confidentiality, receive the very best service and leave feeling a million dollars.

Unlike other businesses in the hair replacement field we have no desire to expand constantly or take over the world! Instead we would rather have a manageable number of clients who feel valued and know that we are on their side. We tend not to advertise as we don’t lose clients very often – hopefully this is a sign that we are doing something right! As we often say, the other businesses working with hair loss or hair replacement shouldn’t really need to spend a fortune on advertising – it would be far better to focus their time and energy on their existing clients as they should be the most important thing to them.

Some blogs are just to sell products or services but hopefully this one is different. Of course we want to let people know about the services we offer and how these can help but also we want to offer advice on hair care so they can help themselves. Hopefully this will means that visitors are more likely to return.

Before washing your hair, brush it through first as this will help reduce tangles. Wetting tangled hair will only lead to more tangles and can lead to hair breaking or shedding prematurely. Commercial dentangling sprays can help make a big difference if continued matting is a problem.

When drying the hair, be as gentle as possible and allow the hair to dry naturally as much as possible. When in the sun, use a UV protection spray whenever possible and if swimming in a chlorinated swimming pool, wet your hair first with fresh water as this will reduce the amount of chlorinated water your hair absorbs.

In all cases, common sense is the key but for specialist help and advice we are always only an email or phone call away.

This article is a bit unusual in that we just want to say thank you for the patience of all our clients whilst the improvements have been ongoing within our premises. 2017 promises to be an exciting year so before we get fully into the usual pre-Christmas rush we just wanted to upgrade our premises so thank you to everyone (not to mention the staff too) for all their understanding. Her appointment and the building works only serve to underline the commitment of Hair Technology International to remain at the forefront of the hair loss/ hair replacement field in the UK. The word “laser” carries with it all sorts of associations with space age technology and the like and perhaps this is one of the reasons why specialist laser hair regrowth centres have sprung up in recent times. The truth here is that research has shown the appropriate laser treatment can help reduce hair loss but it in no way justifies the hype and exaggerated claims put about by some of our competitors.

In most cases laser is combined with topical treatment applications to the scalp so this in itself casts doubt on whether any improvement is due to the laser or the liquid (usually Minoxidil) applied.

There have been two trials on laser devices and they have showed a modest increase in hair density. We know from animal studies that plucking hair which has stopped growing but hasn’t yet been shed can trigger the follicle into producing a new hair and it is possible that laser could have a similar effect.

All in all it is clear that much more independent research is required. That is not to say that laser treatment should be discounted but rather approached with care. At Hair Technology International we do offer home laser kits that include complimentary treatments to maximise the chances of a good result but we do not feel that the current science justifies spending hundreds or even thousands of pounds on in-salon laser courses.

We sometimes come across newspaper articles on how hair replacement has changed someone’s life. This is true but usually behind the sad story (and the usual before and after pictures) there is little new to report. Particularly guilty of running juicy articles are the tabloids where they will dedicate one or two pages to a particular business extolling their virtues and how they have this “revolutionary” new procedure.

The truth is that this revolutionary procedure is probably one that we have quietly been offering in Scotland for many years, perhaps even a decade or two. At Hair Technology International we are often offered the opportunity to tell the wider public about what we do but we feel that confidentiality is more important than headlines. For this reason you will never see us parading customers in the newspapers for the sake of a few moments in the limelight.

A recent article in a very popular tabloid amounted to little more than free publicity – give a back story and the mandatory before and after shots and provided there is a “human interest” (i.e. hook to catch the reader) chances are the article will be published without question. The same applies with transplant clients where marketing spiel is repeated as fact in exchange for attention grabbing pictures. Having spoken to some of the editors dealing with these articles they find it difficult to confirm whether or not the articles are totally accurate they believe they are print worthy. Perhaps this is something that the governing authorities should look at, since the articles are rarely if ever objective so don’t provide a balanced view.

Unfortunately this is what we come against – stories being published without proper scrutiny all for the sake of filling a page.
